Coming Home to Yourself Through Midlife's Changes

Midlife can feel like your body, your roles, and your sense of yourself are all shifting at once. Even when the changes are expected, they can leave you feeling unsteady, unsure of who you're becoming.

Perimenopause is part of this picture for many women, and it brings real hormonal and physical changes worth discussing with your doctor. What we offer at North Star Therapy is therapy for midlife transitions: support for the emotional and identity side of this stage, the part that's easy to miss when the conversation stays focused on symptoms.

What Midlife Transitions Might Look Like

  • A part of you that's more irritable or reactive than usual

  • Feeling foggy, uncertain, or disconnected from yourself

  • Questioning a career, relationship, or sense of purpose that used to feel settled

  • Grief for a body, role, or chapter of life that's changing

  • Days when you don't quite recognize the person looking back at you

How Psychotherapy Can Support You Through Midlife Transitions

At North Star Therapy, individual psychotherapy offers a safe, confidential space to explore what's changing in you right now and find steadier ground. Together, we'll get curious about the parts of you that feel unsettled, self-critical, or overwhelmed, and understand what they're carrying.

Through our work together, you can:

  • Reconnect with the parts of you that feel most unsettled right now

  • Soften a self-critical inner voice that's grown louder

  • Get curious about who you're becoming, rather than just managing the changes

  • Find steadier footing in your relationships as things shift

  • Reconnect with your own values and sense of purpose

What the Research Says

The mood shifts, anxiety, and sleep disruption that often show up alongside perimenopause aren't just something to push through. There's a growing body of research on the emotional and psychological side of this transition, and it points somewhere hopeful: talk therapy helps.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based approaches are the two most studied forms of psychotherapy for this stage of life. Research has found both can ease anxiety, low mood, and sleep difficulty during perimenopause, and improve overall quality of life, alongside, not instead of, any medical care from your doctor. CBT works by helping you notice and shift the thoughts that can turn a hard moment into a harder one, a racing thought like "something is wrong with me" can intensify distress in a way that outlasts the moment itself. Mindfulness-based approaches work a little differently, building your capacity to notice what's happening in your body and mind without being swept up in it.

This is very much in line with how we work at North Star. Alongside CBT and Mindfulness-Based approaches, we also draw on Internal Family Systems to help you build a different relationship with the parts of you that feel most reactive, self-critical, or afraid of what's changing, and Emotion-Focused Therapy to support you in moving through mood shifts themselves, rather than around them. Together, these approaches offer both the well-studied tools that ease day-to-day distress and the deeper work of understanding what this transition means for you.

To be clear, this isn't treatment for perimenopause itself, and it won't change what's happening hormonally. What it can do is change your relationship to this chapter, so it feels less like something happening to you and more like a passage you're moving through with steadier footing.

Our Approaches to Therapy

At North Star Therapy, we use an integrated approach, drawing on the modalities that best match what works for you, including:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Helps you understand and befriend the parts of you that feel most unsettled, self-critical, or overwhelmed right now.

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Supports you in processing the mood shifts and emotional ups and downs that can come with this stage of life.

  • Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Offers insight into how past experiences and patterns may be shaping how you're relating to this transition.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A well-researched approach for easing anxiety, low mood, and sleep difficulty during perimenopause, by working with the thoughts and behaviors that can intensify distress.

  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Build your capacity to notice difficult thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations with curiosity instead of alarm.
